PHOTOGRAPHY WITH PURPOSE
Discover how the skills you already have as a photographer can serve others, support causes that matter, strengthen your community, and create meaningful change.
You already have something powerful in your hands. Let’s put it to work for something that matters.
As photographers, we have an incredible gift. We create images that preserve memories, tell stories, bring people together, and sometimes make a difference in ways we never could have imagined. Over the years, I learned that my camera could do so much more than create beautiful portraits.
Photography with Purpose starts with one simple question: How can I use what I already know how to do to help someone else?
Giving back doesn’t have to start with a huge organization or a complicated plan. Some of the most meaningful opportunities are already happening right in your own community.
Local charity events, food drives, school fundraisers, nonprofit partnerships and community traditions can all become opportunities to use your photography, your time and your creativity to help others.
The goal isn’t recognition. It’s showing up, building genuine relationships and finding ways to use what you already know how to do to make a difference.
Sometimes the simplest place to begin is right in your own backyard.

“You don’t have to change the whole world. Sometimes changing one person’s world is enough.”
I’ve spent 37 years behind the camera, but some of the most meaningful work of my career has had very little to do with creating a beautiful photograph. It has been about what that photograph can do for someone else.
Throughout my career, I’ve had the privilege of working with local charities, national organizations, families in need, and causes that have become incredibly close to my heart. I’m also the Co-founder of Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep, an organization created to provide remembrance photography to families experiencing the loss of a baby. That experience showed me just how powerful a camera can be when we use it in service of others.
At my studio, giving back has become part of who we are. From annual Halloween, Santa, Easter, and America Forever charity events to partnerships with organizations and nonprofits, I’ve learned that you don’t need a huge platform or a huge budget to make a difference. You just have to be willing to start.
I don’t believe we do good things because we expect something in return. But after decades of doing this work, I’ve seen something remarkable happen again and again: when you do good, good things happen. Relationships grow. Communities come together. People remember how you made them feel. And sometimes opportunities appear that you never could have planned.
That’s what I want to share with you in this course. Not a formula for turning charity into marketing, but the lessons I’ve learned about using the gifts we already have as photographers to serve others, create awareness, build genuine relationships, and make a difference.
For decades, I've used photography to give back in ways both big and small. Some began with a simple studio event. Others grew into relationships and organizations that reached far beyond anything I could have imagined. In this course, I'm sharing what worked, what I learned, and how you can find your own way to make a difference.
Real stories • Practical ideas • Decades of experience
Giving back should come from the heart, not from a marketing plan. We'll talk about choosing causes you genuinely care about, recognizing needs in your own community, and finding ways to use the skills you already have to help.
I'll share the deeply personal story behind co-founding Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep and how helping one family grew into an organization that has touched families and photographers around the world. This isn't a formula to recreate. It's a reminder that you may never know how far one act of service can reach.
Go behind the scenes of our Halloween, Santa, Easter, America Forever, and other charity portrait events. I'll share how these events started, how they've evolved, what we've learned, and how they became traditions our clients and community look forward to year after year.
I'll share experiences from working with local and national organizations, including Susan G. Komen, CCAI, hospitals, food banks, the USO, and others. We'll talk about approaching organizations, listening to what they actually need, building trust, and creating relationships rather than one-time transactions.
Sometimes the greatest thing we can give isn't money. It's our ability to tell a story. We'll explore ways photography can help organizations share their mission, reach new people, celebrate those they serve, and create awareness around important causes.
Over time, some of this work expanded into documentary filmmaking and nonprofit video projects—but video production is not a primary focus of this course.
We don't do good things for recognition, referrals, or business. We do them because they're worth doing. But after decades of giving back, I've learned that generosity has a way of creating connection. We'll talk openly about how service can build trust, strengthen relationships, create community awareness, inspire your team, and sometimes open doors you never expected.

No. In fact, this course can help you think through where to begin. We’ll talk about finding causes that genuinely matter to you, approaching organizations, and creating relationships that feel authentic for everyone involved.
Absolutely not. Giving back can start with one family, one small event, or one local organization. Some of the most meaningful work begins with a very simple idea and grows naturally over time.
Yes. You don’t need a large team to make an impact. I’ll share ideas that can be adapted to your own business, resources, community, and the amount of time you have available.
Yes. We’ll talk about building genuine relationships, approaching organizations professionally, setting expectations, and finding ways to work together that serve the cause first.
No. That distinction is incredibly important to me. We don’t do good things because we expect recognition or business in return. This course is about serving first. I’ll also share what I’ve learned over the years about the relationships, trust, community, and unexpected opportunities that can grow naturally when you consistently show up for others.
We’ll touch on some of the ways photography and storytelling can create awareness for a cause, including examples from work I’ve done with organizations. But this is primarily a photography course. Video production is its own world and deserves much deeper training than we’ll cover here.
That’s okay. You don’t need to have everything figured out before you begin. Part of this course is about identifying what genuinely matters to you and finding a way to use the skills you already have to help.
No. This course is for photographers at different stages of business who want to use their photography in a meaningful way. The ideas can be adapted to where you are right now.
